Decal Paintings

Gerald Hayes

2008 – 2010

Loosely based on a variety of negative shapes, the paintings shown here are selected from 2008, 2009 and 2010. Many images can be found among the patterns but most shapes I chose to use only imply or suggest an image. The dominant shapes in each painting were developed from early drawings in my sketchbooks — an ampersand, helix loops and letter forms. A narrative homage or visual parody was often found during the process of making these wood panel paintings.
